Kids play makeup products didn’t meet our high standards for formulation and fun - here’s what we cut out:

Parabens,

The most widely used preservative in cosmetics. Mostly used in makeup to prevent contamination of products & ensuring shelf life. Parabens are linked to a host of serious health concerns, from cancer to infertility. They are known endocrine disruptors, which means they can cause damage to the body’s many important hormonal systems.

Petrochemicals,

Incredibly common in beauty products. They can generate a substance that contributes to some cancers. Some of the trace contaminants in petroleum-based ingredients often readily penetrate the skin. Something to avoid given our kids thin skin barrier.

Talc,

In its pure form, talc is safe. The problem is that talc is often contaminated with asbestos, which causes cancer, so it’s a risky ingredient to use.

Phthalates,

Group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break. In cosmetics, it is used in nail polish, hair spray, and fragrances. Phthalates are linked to endocrine disruption, development and reproductive toxicity, and cancer. Phthalates have been banned from cosmetic products in the EU.

Artificial Dyes,

Artificial colors used to make products look pretty. Known as FD&C colors or Lakes, these colors are made of 20+ chemicals and have been associated with skin allergies and hyperactivity in children.

PEGs,

Petroleum-based compounds used in cream bases for cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. PEGs can cause irritation, systemic toxicity, and cancer. PEGs function as a penetration enhancer and can allow harmful ingredients to be absorbed more readily through the skin.

Synthetic Fragrances,

Used in nearly every type of make-up and personal care product. The FDA does not require companies to disclose the ingredients used in their fragrance, it is protected as a trade secret. These unlisted ingredients can trigger allergies, migraines, and asthma symptoms, and have been linked to cancer and neurotoxicity. All of the toxic ingredients that you’re looking to avoid, can be added back into the products under the guise of the word fragrance.

Carmine

A red dye extracted from the females of a scaled insect species found in Mexico and Central America. More than 70,000 of these beetles are killed to produce just 1 pound of dye, which can be found in many cosmetics, food and textiles. Carmine has been associated with severe allergic reactions. This ingredient is listed in the PETA's Caring Consumer guide as a substance of animal origin.

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil

Magnesium Myristate

Are your formulas all natural?

Jovy is a hyper-clean brand for kids that uses natural and synthetic ingredients, all of which are tested and proven to be safe. Our formulas don’t contain toxins or any harmful ingredients. As we know, there are good and bad chemical ingredients, just like there are good and bad natural ones. We do try, however, to have mostly natural formulations. Our formulas will always have a higher percentage of proven-safe fruit, vegetable and plant-derived ingredients. Our current formulations have 90-95% natural origin.

We analyzed several products in the market that were targeted to kids, some with all natural ingredients, including no preservatives. Some of the lip formulas we tested were already rancid, even though they were new. According to the Good Face Project, microbes are likely to form, grow, and spread in makeup and skin care without an effective preservative.

As with many unregulated phrases, all-natural doesn't equal safe if the formula is contaminated or unstable. Our focus is providing the safest formulas with the safest ingredients, natural or synthetic. That's why we offer the first and only EWG VERIFIED play makeup make just for kids.

Is your makeup real makeup?

Absolutely! Jovy’s makeup is real makeup made just for kids. Nothing that is applied on your kids’ skin should be a toy, cheaply made, or treated lightly.

Our product is made in Italy with high quality ingredients and manufactured under the strictest EU regulations. The only difference is that our makeup is one of the cleanest out there.

Do your products contain wheat, gluten, sesame, etc?

Jovy products do not intentionally contain nuts, eggs, wheat, gluten or sesame. We formulated each product to be suitable for even the most sensitive skin and our products are dermatologist-approved.

Although our formula is hypoallergenic, we recommend doing a patch test first, in case of trace amounts of allergens from the manufacturing process.

Why does my lip gloss appear cracked inside the tube?

We understand it can be concerning to see cracks in the lip gloss inside the tube, but don’t worry—this is completely normal! Here’s why it happens:

Temperature Changes: Lip gloss can sometimes expand or contract due to changes in temperature. This can cause it to shift inside the sealed tube, giving the appearance of cracks.
Natural Settling: Over time, the gloss may settle while it's stored or as it’s used. This is a normal part of the product’s consistency.
Formulation: Our lip glosses include natural hydrating ingredients which are sensitive to changes in humidity, which can create visible lines or cracks in the gloss inside the tube.

Rest assured, these cosmetic changes do not affect the quality or effectiveness of the product. Simply unscrew the applicator and mix to return to its original appearance and consistency!

Is Titanium Dioxide safe in makeup?

Our commitment to safety and transparency is paramount, and before incorporating any ingredient into our formulas, we conduct extensive research to ensure safety.

Our research concluded that titanium dioxide (TiO2) does not present risk from dermal exposure and is, for example, considered amongst the safest forms of non-aerosolized sunscreens. The potential concern with titanium dioxide is when it is airborne, and specifically, the risk with airborne titanium dioxide involves inhalation of nanoized titanium dioxide particles (<100nm in size).

We use titanium dioxide in our pressed powders, and received direct confirmation from The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics regarding the safety of titanium dioxide in this form. Further, the qualification process to become EWG VERIFIED required rigorous testing and scrutiny of each ingredient and the finished formula by EWGs qualified scientists.

We encourage parents to avoid spray forms of TiO2 and foods containing TiO2. We would avoid loose powder makeup containing TiO2. However, we are confident that the ingredient and form factor we use is safe for use with kids, as we remain the only play makeup certified-safe by an independent scientific organization.

Does Jovy conduct heavy metal testing?

Yes, our products are tested for heavy metals as a part of the rigorous EWG Verified certification. EWG Verified is the only third-party certification that publicly discloses its full criteria, relies on staff scientists' expertise, and requires complete transparency of all ingredients, including fragrance.
